- Filmul îl zugrăvește pe Ebenezer Scrooge, un cămătar prosper, de o zgârcenie fără margini , care nutrea un dispreț profund față de bucuriile aduse de spiritul Crăciunului. Acesta prefera să păstreze totul pentru el, atrăgându-și astfel oprobiul oamenilor. Filmul debutează cu imaginile care-l înfățișează pe Scrooge plătind sicriul celui care-i fusese partener de afaceri, Jacob Marley, cu o sumă foarte mică.
