Filmul, inspirat din realitate, îl prezintă pe ofițerul german Franz von Werra, pilot al unui avion de vânătoare, care a fost doborât în timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial pe teritoriul Marii Britanii, fiind singurul pilot german care a reușit să evadeze după ce a fost luat prizonier.
