In the 16th century, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the Pope’s nephew, built a villa specifically to house his private art collection, one of the greatest of its time. Bought by the Italian government in 1902, this wonderfully rich collection brings together masterpieces signed by the greatest of artists. Reputed to be the inventor of oil painting, the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck (1390-1441) is a major 15th century artist. He is considered to be the founder of western portraiture and practised this art meticulously. Look closely at the famous “Arnolfini Portrait” exposed at the National Gallery, where the circular mirror at the back of the room shows the artist’s reflection, or the beautiful “Virgin of Chancellor Rolin” exposed at the Louvre, a picture in which three arches open onto a river landscape. Kees van Dongen was a Dutch painter, follower of fauvism, his early work was influenced by symbolism and the rise of pointillism. He began his studies at the age of 16 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. It was the vivid colours of their paintings that earned them the name "Fauves". His portraits are very known among the French bourgeoisie. Then, he became a social painter. He liked to paint the circus and the music hall with its dancers and acrobats. Very quickly, women became his favourite subject, and he liked to distort features of his models. He painted the portrait of cinema personalities with a lot of satyrs: outrageous pose, theatrical costume and accessories. He tried to show all the fakeness of this world and of these people living only through characters.

Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the Marmottan Museum was a center of First Empire art. We go there to admire the magnificent collection of Paul Marmottan, and to relive the nostalgia of the great Napoleonic era, its imperial splendor, its past glories. But little by little, the Marmottan Museum is becoming a showcase for another style of art, less classic, more avant-garde: impressionism. In 1993, the museum changed its name: it became the Musée Marmottan-Monet.

A fashion photographer, Anthony Barboza's ambition is also to fight against the discrimination suffered by black American professionals in this still very segregated environment. His works are now in many private collections or museums as "Nigila, NYC, 1973" acquired by the MoMa.

Of Spanish origin, Francis Picabia was an active member of the Dada group. However, being both provocative and iconoclastic, he soon began to scorn the serious nature of the avant-garde movements. His painting was at times realistic, at times abstract, and he sought above all to explore potential in art. This collection opens the doors of the Centre Pompidou (Paris) which presents some of Picabia’s major works, such as his famous “Cacodylic Eye” and “Adoration of the Calf”, recently acquired by the museum. In the 16th century, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the Pope’s nephew, built a villa specifically to house his private art collection, one of the greatest of its time. Bought by the Italian government in 1902, this wonderfully rich collection brings together masterpieces signed by the greatest of artists. You will find one of the copies of Leda and the Swan by da Vinci as well as Caravaggio’s David. Enjoy your visit!

Jean Dubuffet is a theoretician of Art brut and the most contested and known French artist of the post-war period. In 1969 he decided to build a place for his Cabinet Logologique and at his own expense. This assembly, called La Closerie Falbala, is a pure creation of the mind. This construction site will be considerable, it’s a real artistic and technical challenge. This monumental work is today one of the "youngest" historical monuments in France.
