DJAZZ asked them why they wrote that special song, what was the first record they bought and what is his or her most precious musical memory. The festival portraits are beautiful reports filmed at the most special jazz festivals and concerts. They revive the memory of the festival, the music and the experience.

Every year, the Jazz en Baie festival takes place in the beautiful bay of Mont Saint-Michel Today’s broadcast shows a special gathering between two grandmasters of French jazz: pianist Jacky Terrasson and trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo. The two team up for an amazing concert in which jazz is combined with soul and a touch of chanson française. The Franco-American pianist Terrasson delights in travelling the world, collaboration with others and leading his own trio, quartet, or quintet. With his long-time friend, Stéphane Belmondo, Terrasson has produced wonderful CDs and beautiful concerts. One then finds the trumpeter on the pianist’s album ‘Gouache’; on another, the pianist guests on Belmondo’s ‘Ever After’. At the Jazz en Baie festival, the duo plays its amazing piano and trumpet music. Highly recommended!

This program presents two concerts from Schloss Ansbach in 1978. The first concert features Gil Evans and his orchestra, consisting of Gil Evans on piano, Steve Lacy on soprano saxophone, Arthur Blythe on alto saxophone, Pit Levin on synthesizers, Earl McIntyre on trombone, Lewis Soloff on trumpet, Geoffrey Berlin on bass and Sue Evans on percussion instruments. The second concert features saxophonist Ornette Coleman at the peak of his musically expressive powers. Coleman is joined by Bern Nix on guitar, Charles Ellerbee on guitar, Albert Arnold on bass, and Shannon Jackson on drums and percussion.

Since 1960, the legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd has lent his adventurous, lyrical sound to collaborations with likes of Cannonball Adderley, Keith Jarrett and The Beach Boys. His early and highly successful experiments blending jazz and rock music charted a path that led to the electric fusion of Miles Davis and The Headhunters, while his exploration of spirituality and transcendental meditation added a new depth to his sound. Lloyd moves from hard swing to subtle ballads, blending gorgeous textures and Eastern influences. This 1966 recording features Lloyd’s quartet, accompanied by Keith Jarrett (piano), Cecil McBee (double bass) and Jack DeJohnette (drums), playing some of Lloyd’s own compositions.

Dutch jazz singer Ellen Pels presents her latest release, “Love.” Recorded live at Theater Odeon in Zwolle, the Netherlands, Ellen is joined by The Red Limo String Quartet and her own nine-piece rhythm section. The singer combines her passionate love for music with her own, stirring lyrics, inspired by spiritual philosophers like Paulo Coelho, Eckhard Tolle, and Deepak Chopra. Her spiritually saturated music is challenging and theatrical, yet warm and melodic.

Annual trade fair, exhibition, and festival jazzahead! is one of the international jazz community's most important events. Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts. Due to COVID-19, only half of the scheduled performances of the 2021 edition were actually recorded in Bremen. Among the performing bands is the Nefertiti Quartet. The band, which takes its name from a Wayne Shorter composition, was founded in 2013 by pianist Delphine Deau at the CRR conservatoire in Paris, France. She is joined by saxophonist Camille Maussion, double bassist Pedro Ivo Ferreira, and drummer Pierre Demange.

The North Sea Jazz Festival is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz as the festival’s staple music genre, many others, such as blues, soul, funk, or hip hop, pass by. In 1989, decorated American saxophonist and composer Michael Brecker and his band played at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Accompanied by bassist Jeff Andrews, drummer Adam Nussbaum, pianist Joey Calderazzo, and guitarist Mike Stern, Brecker displayed his virtuosity in spades.

Teus Nobel is a Dutch trumpet and flugelhorn player. As a little boy, he was inspired by ‘power’ trumpeters such as Maynard Ferguson and Bill Chase. While studying at the conservatory, he played both as jazz player and as a commercial session musician at musicals. After his time at the conservatory, he started playing in the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra, playing march music influenced by pop and jazz. Today’s broadcast was recorded at the Amsterdam BIMhuis. Teus dedicates his compositions to his all-time heroes Jarmo Hoogendijk, Woody Shaw, Christian Scott, Roy Hargrove and Eric Vloeimans. This performance is based on his second album ‘Legacy’.

Three giants of jazz join forces in this memorable concert: pianist Herbie Hancock, vocalist Bobby McFerrin, and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Recorded live at the Munich Philharmonie on July 15, 1988, the Herbie Hancock Trio is joined on stage by Michael Brecker, who was maybe the most influential tenor saxophonist of his generation. While the audience is already wowed by the quartet's performance, vocalist Bobby McFerrin steals the show: with obvious enjoyment and sense of humour, the master vocalist challenges his partners.

Rotterdam’s ‘ BIRD’ is a club, café and restaurant with a live music programme that's deeply rooted in jazz, and also branches out towards soul, funk, hip-hop and electronic music as well. Its name ‘BIRD’ refers to the nickname of the legendary New York jazz saxophonist, bebop co-founder Charlie Parker (1920-1955). BIRD serves Neapolitan pizzas, good wines, no-nonsense beers and an all-round metropolitan rawness. Since 2014, this urban jazz club and DJAZZ.tv have been collaborating for a series of music programmes: ‘BIRD.tv’, allowing you to experience the best BIRD concerts and interviews as from a first row seat! This episode is reserved for ‘De Deeldeliers’, featuring poet and so-called ‘Night Mayor of Rotterdam’ Jules Deelder (*1944). His poems cover Rotterdam city life, drug use, and jazz. In De Deeldeliers, he is accompanied by Hammond organist Bas van Lier, tenor saxophonist Boris van der Lek, and drummer Erik Kooger.

The term "jam-session" was coined in the 1920s when black and white musicians gathered in smoke-filled bars after their respective concerts to enjoy the kind of jazz they could not play in traditional sets. Bing Crosby was a regular at these sessions, and had fun marking the first and third beats of musical phrases by clapping hands, which the musicians call "jammin' the beat". Today, the Seine Sessions revive the happy years of "jam sessions", while the cream of jazz, blues, gipsy and funk Parisian scenes occurs on the boards of the legendary restaurant and jazz club Le Réservoir. Titled "Legendary Jazz", this episode hosted by Eddy King features unique performances by artists playing together for the first time, and interviews with Steve McCraven, Oona Guino, Rodolphe Lauretta, and many others.

Since 2005, the Morgenland Festival of Osnabrueck has dedicated itself to the fascinating music culture of the Near and Middle East. From traditional and classical music to avant-garde, jazz, and rock, the festival program also features art, such as visual arts, dance, and theatre of interdisciplinary projects. This episode entitled “A Trace Of Grace” features the rich and complex music of Michel Godard and Kayhan Kalhor, two musicians interested in instruments poorly known in the West. Kayhan plays, for example, the Kamancheh, an ancient Persian instrument known for its slow and melancho sound.

The trio ‘Nandi’ is made up of the Indian master percussionist Ghatam Suresh, bassist Pascal Lovergne, and pianist Stefan Orins. They give the tried-and-true piano-bass-drums format a fresh new sound by blending jazz with South Indian Carnatic rhythms and melodies. These various musical worlds complement and enhance each other, in a perfectly balanced mix. Ghatam Suresh's virtuosity on various percussion instruments (the ‘ghatam kanjira’ and ‘morsing’) and vocals, together with Pascal Lovergne’s characteristic sound on acoustic bass guitar and Stefan Orins’ lyrical elegance create a deep and soulful original music, a powerful new sound. The world-renowned North Sea Jazz Festival features a wide variety of genres, including traditional New Orleans jazz, swing, bop, free jazz, fusion, avant-garde and electronic jazz, blues, gospel, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, world beat and Latin. The festival was founded by entrepreneur and jazz fan Paul Acket, who sold his highly successful pop magazine publishing house to organize and fund the first edition of the festival in 1976. This broadcast from the North Sea Jazz Archives presents the amazing Dizzy Gillespie, accompanied by The Skymasters.

Despite his advanced age, the legendary jazz pianist Earl Hines was at the top of his game when he performed in the Belgian town of Spa in 1977. With a band consisting of Rudy Rutherford (reeds), Jimmy Leary (bass), and Eddie Graham (drums), Hines livens up the room with his interpretations of “I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me” and “The Man I Love.” Marva Josie joins the group for soulful renditions of “A Sunday Kind of Love” and the well-known classic “Kansas City” before the set comes to a close with “Caravan,” which features a lengthy drum solo by Graham.

As part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival and Blue Note Records’ 75th anniversary, pianists Robert Glasper and Jason Moran delivered a stunning jazz piano duet, resulting in an exciting exploration of the great history of jazz. An intricate knowledge of African-American music is infused with modern energy. The two musicians reinterpret the stride piano tradition through captivating original songs and personal interpretations of the music of Albert Ammons, Andrew Hill, Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman and Herbie Hancock.

There’s no question about it: with a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album for her recording ‘Made In Brazil’, seven previous Grammy nominations, four ‘Gold Disc Awards’, and three ‘Best Vocal Album Awards’ in Japan, Eliane Elias has taken her place in the pantheon of music giants. In her projects, Elias wears many hats: she serves as producer, composer, lyricist, arranger, pianist, and vocalist. In this concert broadcast, recorded live at the Philharmonie in Munich, Elias shows her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style, which blends her Brazilian samba roots and her sensuous, alluring voice with her impressive instrumental bebop, jazz, classical, and compositional skills. She is an artist beyond category, and in this concert she performs with Jay Randall Anderson (bass) and Adam Nussbaum (drums).
