The Red List - African Elephants
In a single decade between 1979 and 1989, half of all Africa’s Elephants were lost to the ivory trade. For the next decade the trade lay dormant and African Elephant populations began to recover. But a new crisis was brewing, fueled by demand for ivory particularly in China where a demographic and economic boom had taken place. Between 2002 and 2011 Maisels et al (2013) estimate that the world’s forest Elephant population was reduced by 62%. Our research estimates that the number of Elephants killed for their ivory between 2010 and 2012 was 100 000. The demand for ivory in the far East is the primary driver of the killing. In the four years up to 2014 the wholesale price of raw ivory in China tripled, reaching a per kilo dollar price of $2100. -

The Red List - Southern Ground Hornbill
The charismatic Southern Ground-Hornbill is a bird that many people already know well. They are culturally important as the ‘thunder' or 'rain’ birds and are a flagship species for the savannah biome. At present, Southern Ground-Hornbills are considered within South Africa as ‘Endangered', with their numbers outside of formally protected areas still declining. It is likely that the birds will soon meet the IUCN Red Data List Criteria as being ‘Critically Endangered’ in South Africa. It’s estimated that only 1500 Ground-Hornbills are left in South Africa, of which half are safe within the protected areas. This means there are only an estimated 417 breeding groups in the whole of South Africa, data shows that, on average, only one chick is raised to adulthood every 9 years. The reasons for their decline are predominantly loss of habitat to croplands, bush-encroachment, overgrazing and plantations, loss of nesting trees, secondary poisoning and electrocution. -

Dream Journey - Cuncum - Mexico
February 2017 saw me embark upon a travel expedition through Scotland, Poland, France, Mexico, Belize and, (alas! ), back. Not only was it the first time I ventured out to Central America, but also the first time I seriously pushed my bravery boundaries to do a whole lot of things I'd never tried before. I defeated my life-long fear of scubadiving and skydiving, (the Carribbean vistas do help! - No danger I'd do that again in Aberdeen), I went zip-lining over a Mexican jungle, I tried habanero-packed streetfood, (failed at that miserably), and organic tequila, (managed that better;), I climbed a Maya pyramid in the middle of a Belizean rainforest and fed hibiscus flowers to a very extravagant donkey. Most importantly, however, I got to know some incredible people - from shamans, wanderers and artists to refugees, businesswomen and expat cowboys. And thanks to aaaall of that, I also got to know a little bit more about myself for visiting the most remote corners of our planet reminds you how different and yet how similar we all are. I'm looking forward to sharing my incredible experience in 5 exciting episodes of our travel series, which really turned out to be a Dream Journey:) I simply cannot wait for more! -

Behind Bars takes you into prisons from around the world, and the true stories of inmates who find themselves inside maximum security lockdown, in the harshest conditions. Colony Eight – one of the toughest and most notorious prisons in Ukraine. It is said that no one has ever managed to escape from here! Over eight hundred prisoners are behind bars in Colony 8 under maximum security. Until twenty years ago, the guards even carried out death sentences at this prison. Not any more – the concept is now a different one. Plenty of “freedom” on the one hand, draconian punishment and military drill on the other. Combined with permanent supervision: Around seventy cameras in the buildings ensure that anything moving gets noticed. One section of the prison is particularly notorious – the wing for the one hundred and sixty lifers: If you end up in this wing, you have absolutely nothing to lose. Because in Ukraine, life imprisonment means: literally being behind bars until you die. -
