This eagerly-awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts was the first-ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Édouard Manet. Covering the entire career of this enigmatic and sometimes controversial artist, the exhibition brought together works from Europe, Asia and the United States. Manet's portraiture has never been the subject of an exhibition, although it represents around half of his artistic output. A cross between Taylorism and Bauhaus, the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam, built between 1926 and 1931, is a gigantic factory where tobacco, coffee and tea were processed until the 1980s. The image is not that of a simple building, but that of a great machine, a great liner clad in glass and metal. Entirely glazed façades reveal the internal structure of the buildings, allowing workers to work in daylight. All movement is by sight through the glassed-in staircases and walkways - transparency is both a writing effect and a surveillance tool. Built by architects Jan Brickman and Leen Van der Vlugt, under the supervision of Van Nelle boss Kees Van der Leuw, the factory is the most important and accomplished achievement of the modern movement in industrial architecture.

For 5 years, the Masterpiece team has beckoned to make a reconstruction of the famous work 'The Tower of Babel' by Pieter Bruegel (the elder). Due to its complexity and the size (with about 1033 figures the no less than 9 double floors) they never dared. But this year, the team picked up the gauntlet and got the job done, thanks to their extreme perseverance.

We have no archival records or direct documentation: the date, intended destination, and exact identification of the figures are left to interpretation and disagreement among various specialists. An unparalleled iconological training, Botticelli's allegories are a real headache not only for art historians, but also for historians of literature and philosophy, lovers of the occult sciences, and even botanists, astronomers, Kabbalists, historians of Christianity... Perhaps only the Mona Lisa has been the subject of more writings and interpretations than the “Allegory of Spring,” and Venus Rising from the Waves is undoubtedly one of the very few paintings immediately recognizable to the general public.

Where do we start when we want to talk about such a famous painting as Velázquez “Las Meninas”? There is an incredibly huge bibliography on this painting, to the point that it is almost utopian to think or hope we can document ourselves on everything in and about it... From the late 1800s to the early 2000s, dozens of books have come out all over the world specifically and solely devoted to this one, single painting. A parallel literary current has even developed around the “enigmas” and “mysteries” connected with “Las Meninas”.

For us today the Montefeltro Altarpiece, preserved in the Brera Art Gallery in Milan, is the “Altarpiece by Piero” par excellence. It is surprising to learn however, that until the late 1800s no one would ever have dreamed of attributing this impressive masterpiece to the hand of Piero della Francesca. For long centuries it was a deeply-rooted belief that the painter of the work was a certain Bartolomeo Corradini, a friar-painter known by the funny nickname of Fra Carnevale. It is in this guise that the Montefeltro Altarpiece came to Brera in 1811 and all the catalogues of the Milan Art Gallery repeated Fra Carnevale’s name until the end of that century. Piero della Francesca was simply forgotten... His name and his works ended up literally in the dust of oblivion until they disappeared from the horizon of history... His critical resurrection happened however, in the early 1900s, the century in which the Master painter wielded a powerful influence on the art of the first decades…

The Unal house was designed by Claude Häusermann-Costy and built by Joël Unal between 1972 and 2008. Like many French people, Mr. and Mrs. Unal dreamed of living in a detached house. A classic program, the family home, leads to a singular result - a bubble house built without any right angles. Charles finds a pair of Edwardian silver vases he hopes will prove profitable at an auction in Essex. Geraldine, however, bumps into a chap in the street with a 19th Century French Empire secretaire. It costs her a small fortune – will the gamble pay off? A diversion from the shops sees Charles end up in the cockpit of a very old helicopter while Geraldine learns how a small part of Swindon dating back 170 years influenced the creation of the modern NHS.

Kicking off from Wormsley in Herefordshire they Road Trip into Wales and Oxfordshire, before finally finishing in North Finchley, in London for an auction. Along the way the girls meet a clog maker who carves shoes by hand. While the boys head to the Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum to hear about the regiment’s involvement at Gallipoli.

Setting off from the Welsh border town of Monmouth they head for auction in Congleton, Cheshire. Ruth also gets to find out about the incredible 19th century nurse – and it’s not Florence Nightingale – whilst Su visits ancient Roman town Caerleon and finds time for an amphitheatre showdown with Phil. And Su attempts to resolve an age old mystery...does Phil wear a wig?
