Born in Lyon to a German family who fled to France in 1939, André Perlstein was separated from his parents at an early age due to the circumstances of the war and was hidden, along with his sister, by a Protestant family before being raised by a foster family. He became interested in photography in the early 1960s, and took up aerial photography after joining the air force. A meeting with Jean-Marie Cavada, gives him the opportunity to make many photos of stars. From 1967, he works for the Gamma Agency which has just been created by Gilles Caron and Raymond Depardon. In 1973, he was among the photographers who left Gamma to found the Sygma agency.

For almost 500 years, a large painting showing two young women at a fountain has been seen as an absolute hymn to beauty and love, executed by the young Titian who had set out to conquer the Venetian art scene. It is a solemn, luminous song, looking onto a bright, harmonious universe; it is the first true masterpiece of the twenty-five-year-old painter who knowingly started revolutionizing the history of painting. As one of his contemporaries said, Titian “walks hand in hand with nature; all of his figures are alive, move, and their flesh quivers.” After changing hands several times among different Venetian collections, it was finally purchased by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in 1608 for the Roman collection to which it still belongs today. During the 20th century, the fame of the ‘Mona Lisa’ spread, establishing itself as the most iconic and recognisable painting of all time. It has been exploited in every sphere of culture and advertising, to the extent that its status as a pop icon has almost overshadowed its artistic value and historical significance. But if we consider Leonardo’s achievements as a pioneering craftsman and the unprecedented qualities of this work, the ‘Mona Lisa’ truly marked a turning point in portraiture. A masterpiece that set new standards in its day and which, five hundred years later, has become the very symbol of art.

The story of “The Calling of Saint Matthew” begins on a hot summer day in Rome in 1600, the Jubilee Year. The entire Eternal City is a construction site: streets are full of scaffolding, dust clouds, loose cobblestones, the continuous banging of hammers and rasping of saws, carpenters with Lombard accents, errand boys shouting across the streets in Roman dialect, stevedores unloading barrels and crates from boats along the Tiber. The narrow streets in the town center are full of jostling tourists and monsignors rushing to get somewhere, and every once in a while the crowd parts to let a sedan chair or carriage of a cardinal through. Convent bells ring, droves of pilgrims mass along the routes connecting the old basilicas, reciting the rosary as they go. Not a day goes by without the opening of a new church, an oratory, or a chapel. As the trip winds across Yorkshire there is the chance to meet a very special woman from Sheffield and a look around some incredible gardens with an amazing history.

In 1840 Turner painted the masterpiece "Clouds and Water". Charlotte tries to fathom his loose style, with thick blobs. It costs her a small fortune – will the gamble pay off? A diversion from the shops sees Charles end up in the cockpit of a very old helicopter while Geraldine learns how a small part of Swindon dating back 170 years influenced the creation of the modern NHS.

In each episode of Photo Contest, two contestants compete on an imposed theme such as rock'n roll, Japan or architecture. They have one hour to take the best possible photographs before editing them for 30 minutes in a studio. The photographs they have selected are then presented to Agnès Grégoire, editor-in-chief of PHOTO magazine, who will have to choose the best photographer.
