Reputed to be the inventor of oil painting, the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck (1390-1441) is a major 15th century artist. He is considered to be the founder of western portraiture and practised this art meticulously. Look closely at the famous “Arnolfini Portrait” exposed at the National Gallery, where the circular mirror at the back of the room shows the artist’s reflection, or the beautiful “Virgin of Chancellor Rolin” exposed at the Louvre, a picture in which three arches open onto a river landscape. In no way was Pierre Bonnard destined to be a painter. However, he became one of the pillars of the Nabi Movement. His work, more closely linked to emotions than to realism, is impossible to classify. It is punctuated with huge sunny landscapes, of both the Mediterranean and Normandy, with interior scenes, with nudes and self portraits. It's a school like no other, built entirely of bamboo on the island of Bali in Indonesia. An ambitious project launched by American expatriates John and Cynthia Hardy. Wilhelm Hansen was a visionary businessman who lived in Denmark in the 19th century. He was one of the few collectors to take an interest in the Impressionist painters, at a time when they were attacked and denigrated. The film takes us to Hansen's summer home on the outskirts of Copenhagen, and to the extraordinary exhibition of his collection at London's Royal Academy.

In 1897, Sir Henry Tate, an industrialist and art collector, offered his private art collection to the British nation and financed the construction of the Tate Gallery to house it. Renamed Tate Britain in 2000, the gallery is dedicated to British art. Between 1883 and 1926 Claude Monet lived in a house at Giverny where he created a flower garden and a water garden, which provided the inspiration for his series of paintings known as the “Water Lilies”. The “Water-Lily Pond” portrays this garden, with its water lilies and the Japanese bridge in the background. In the series of eight large canvases on the theme, housed in the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, Monet introduces variations in light according to the hour of the day. Enjoy your visit!

In the second half of the 19th century, Edouard Manet (1832-1883) showed great originality in his painting of historic scenes and portraiture of well-known figures, such as the novelist Zola and the poet Mallarmé. The “Fanciful Figure” exposed at the Louvre-Lens demonstrates an original and very modern style. Joseph Mallord William Turner was one the greatest landscape artists of the 19th century. Atypical and avant-garde, he created his own highly personal style, which earned him the title of “the Painter of Light”, so close was he to perfection in the art of evoking atmosphere. A key artist of the Italian Renaissance, Raffaello Santi (1483-1520) developed a classical art form, based on drawing, which made him the model for many painters in the following centuries. His favourite theme was the Madonna: you can admire, for example, “The Sistine Madonna” in Dresden and the “The Virgin and Child with St John the Baptist” in the Louvre. Born in Aix-en-Provence in the South of France, Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a great French painter of the second half of the 19th century. Impressionist artist first, he is a initiator of the post-impressionnisme and the cubisme in his labour. In his still lifes and his “Bathers”, he is innovative in his geometric forms, which influenced the Cubist artists who came after him. He chose to paint the “Mont Saint Victoire” twenty times in his landscapes.
