10:40Exhibition on Screen • Sez.1, Ep.39Dawn of Impressionism: Paris 1874The Impressionists are the most popular group in art history - millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But, to begin with, they were scorned, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists, “hungry for independence”, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever. What led to that first groundbreaking show 150 years ago? Who were the maverick personalities that wielded their brushes in such a radical and provocative way? The spectacular Musée d’Orsay exhibition brings fresh eyes to this extraordinary tale of passion and rebellion. The story is told not by historians and curators but in the words of those who witnessed the dawn of Impressionism: the artists, press and people of Paris, 1874. See the show that changed everything on the big screen.

12:25Exhibition on Screen • Sez.1, Ep.29Pissarro: Father of ImpressionismWithout Camille Pissarro, there is no Impressionist movement. He is rightfully known as the father of Impressionism. It was a dramatic path that Pissarro followed, and throughout it all he wrote extensively to his family. It is through these intimate and revealing letters that this gripping film reveals Pissarro’s life and work. Born in the West Indies, Pissarro found his passion in paint as a young man in Paris, and by the age of 43 had corralled a group of enthusiastic artists into a new collective. Their first show was scorned by the critics, but the group had acquired a new name: the Impressionists. For the next 40 years Pissarro was the driving force behind what has today become the world’s favourite artistic movement. The Ashmolean Museum has a long tradition of excellence. As the UK’s first ever public museum (it opened its doors in May 1683) it houses a wonderfully rich collection, including the remarkable Pissarro archive. 10:10Architectures • Sez.1, Ep.37Abbatiale Sainte Foy de ConquesIn 1050, one of the first major pilgrimage churches in the Western world was built at Conques, in the middle of the wild Aveyron landscape. This was the birth of "Romanesque" architecture. The abbey church - i.e., a church belonging to an abbey - at Conques is one of the most important structures built in 11th-century France. Its coherence, its location - a small village in the Rouergue region, far from the main medieval traffic routes - its innovative aspect, its state of preservation and the fact that the relics for which it was built are still in situ, make the church at Conques the best work of art for approaching Romanesque architecture in France. In other words, to try and understand how architecture was made at that time in our history, and to dismantle not only the building itself, but also a number of preconceived ideas about Romanesque art, starting with its very name, which is an intellectual construct of the 19th century, or to put it another way: those who built Conques
